How to Make a Backyard Fishpond

    • 1). Call your utility company before you dig. Ask it to mark where gas and electrical lines lie underground. Avoid areas in your backyard that have marked utility lines or a lot of tree roots.

    • 2). Lay out a long piece of rope in the shape you want for the pond. Once you're happy with the design, start digging out the hole for your pond. Most backyard ponds are 16 to 24 inches deep.

    • 3). Spread a thin layer of sand across the bottom of the hole to ensure that the surface is smooth and level.

    • 4). Lay out a sheet of pond liner. Press the liner into all inside corners of the hole. Ensure that at least 1 foot of pond liner sticks out from the top of the hole on all sides.

    • 5). Fill the hole with water. Pull at the pond liner to avoid folds in the bottom of the pond as it fills.

    • 6). Place large rocks around the pond on top of the excess pond liner to keep it covered and in place. Have fun creating a rock design that enhances the pond.

    • 7). Install the pond pump so that it circulates the water. Keep the electrical cord out of the water and hide it behind rocks so that it is not visible at first glance. Plug the pump's cord into an outdoor outlet.
