How to Set Up Artificial Lights for a Venus Fly Trap
- 1). Move your Venus fly trap plants into a terrarium. You do not need to remove the plants from their containers, just simply place the planters inside of a terrarium. While you can purchase a terrarium at a plant store, you can always just use any container that is made of clear glass. Ensure the container has sides and isn't just a glass dish, such as a fish tank or aquarium (or smaller glass container if you are only growing one Venus fly trap. The terrarium does not have to have a lid or closure at the top, because the top is where you will place the artificial lighting.
- 2). Hang florescent lights or aquarium lights from the top of the terrarium so the lights are just above the plant. Some lights have clips, which you can clip to the side of the terrarium. If you have freestanding lights or a fluorescent lamp, just make sure that you bend the bulbs directly over the plants. Ideally, the lights will be 2 to 4 inches above the Venus fly trap, but make sure that the lights are no higher than 8 inches above the plants.
- 3). Run the lights for four to six hours each day. In particularly warm summer months, especially if the plants are already receiving consistent light from a window, then you can reduce and even eliminate the use of the artificial light source.
- 4). Water the Venus fly trap regularly. Watering is even more important when using artificial lights, because the consistent light may encourage the soil to dry out more quickly than natural light. Therefore, check the soil regularly. If it is drying out, but not completely dry to the touch, and then add water until the soil is moist again. Do not overwater or flood the soil. Use distilled water, as watering with tap water could introduce minerals such as calcium and iron to the soil that could ultimately damage and even kill the plant.
