    • 1). Determine where you will first enter the water. Before you step from the bank into moving water, look at the riverbed. Look at rock size and for signs of algae and moss growing on the surface of rocks. Also, determine the flow and speed of the current where you will first enter the river.

    • 2). Reach forward and firmly place your wading staff into the river so that it contacts the river bottom. Position the wading staff so that it will provide a stable and convenient means of support. Place the staff within 12 to 18 inches of where you will place your first step.

    • 3). Hold the staff firmly and place one foot into the river and down onto the riverbed. Firmly plant your foot on the riverbed allowing your foot to settle onto any rocks. Gain your balance, hold onto the wading staff and step into the water with your other foot. Attempt to keep your feet spaced shoulder width apart at all times for good balance.

    • 4). Continue walking in the water with your waders in this manner. Position your wading staff and move one foot at a time until you reach your desired fishing location. Test your foothold each time you plant your foot on the river bottom before moving the other foot.

    • 5). Face upstream when wading in strong currents and faster moving waters. Position yourself so that your feet are shoulder width apart and you are facing upstream. Place your wading staff so that you have maximum support and then move one foot at a time with a side step motion. Reduce the size of your steps by at least half the distance and take your time.
