I found the best equipment to use is ultra light to light tackle. A 5 to 6 foot carbon rod or equivalent. A small reel to handle 2 to 4 lb test line. A minnow lure with a red chin no larger than 2 inches with treble hooks.

      Camo Shirt

It is best if you wear clothes that blend in with the back ground. Your larger perch in clear water are smart. They will not bite if you are well seen. Camo is good to wear and when approaching your sight, do it slowly as to not spook the fish. Murky water will produce some big guys.

The type of terrain I usually catch the big slabs are where I'm not easily seen. Along the edges of grass, around standing trees and stumps, under logs, known underwater structures, and mosey areas. In a boat I will cast towards the bank and pick up the ones that are waiting for the unsuspected bait to get out into the open.

There is nothing better than an 11 inch red ear bending your pole. Work the minnow as if he were swimming at a regular pace. You can stop it briefly then reel some more as to tease the fish. They sit close to the bottom looking up for that easy dinner.

Mossy areas produce the most action. If it is growing in rows, the fish will be at the bottom edge looking up, therefore you are not seen. Just work the area not once but twice before moving.

Live worms will catch perch but not the monsters I go after. Local grass hoppers with a lot of yellow in them work well but the lure saves you some labor from digging and catching live bait. The minnow lure will last a long time if you do the maintenance on it. Keep it clean and hooks sharp.

During spawning season the perch will attack anything that comes close to their nest. These are usually the bigger brim. If the water is deeper try using an under water lure and work the bottom.
