    • 1). Push the downrigger brake handle forward to lock it into place. Attach the weight to the downrigger hook. Use enough weight to keep tension on the line, but not so much that the downrigger bends. Consult the downrigger's operation manual for weight specifications and limitations for the machine.

    • 2). Turn off the "Auto Stop" function on the downrigger (if applicable) before using. If enabled, the "Auto Stop" feature gives control of the line depth to the downrigger; it can't be adjusted manually.

    • 3). Bait the hook on your rod. Some downriggers include a rod when purchased, while others do not.

    • 4). Insert the rod into the rod holder to secure it to the downrigger. If the downrigger is equipped with a rod clip, insert the pole of the rod into the clip and place the handle of the rod into the rod holder.

    • 5). Power on the downrigger. There should be either a switch you need to flip or a button you need to push.

    • 6). Push the depth adjustment buttons to raise and lower the weight. Hold the button until the downrigger registers the depth of your choice. Some models have a digital input screen that requires you to use the provided keypad to enter the specific depth. Once entered, the downrigger will adjust the weight automatically. Other models have a brake handle. Move the brake handle forward and back to adjust the depth.

    • 7). Raise the downrigger weight when you see a tug on the line, which indicates you may have a fish that has taken the bait.
