How to Control Algae in Garden Ponds

    • 1). Raise the perimeter of the pond with a brick wall or dirt mound so that it is higher than the surrounding area. This keeps rain runoff from entering the pond and dumping organic debris that contains algae-feeding nutrients into the water. Build a new pond at a higher level to prevent rainwater runoff.

    • 2). Remove sludge that's deeper than 1/4 inch from the bottom of the pond, using a pool skimmer net. Pick up finer debris with a pond vacuum.

    • 3). Add a bacteria or enzyme product to the pond water to reduce the amount of sludge buildup. Sludge promotes algae growth, and you must control and remove it.

    • 4). Add submersible and floating aquatic plants to the pond -- they will consume the nutrients in the water and starve out the algae. Floating plants also help shade the open water in the middle of the pond, reducing the amount of daily sunlight the algae receives. Stock the pond with one plant for every 2 square feet of water surface. For example, if your pond's surface area is 12 feet, stock the pond with six plants.

    • 5). Install a biological filter so that the beneficial bacteria in the filter eat away the algae. This filter can take weeks to months to establish, but it is the answer to clear water. Add biological treatments to the water, following the label instructions, to speed up the growth of beneficial bacteria.

    • 6). Install a trellis or plant shade trees around the pond to shade the pond water and reduce the amount of sunlight it gets.

    • 7). Reduce the number of fish in the pond. An overabundance of fish waste is beneficial to the algae.

    • 8). Install an ultraviolet sterilizer to rid the pond of single-cell algae and eliminate the green tint in the water. Follow the product's installation instructions.
