How to: Japanese Cord Wrap
- 1). Wrap a sewing measuring tape around the object and multiply that measurement by the length. This will give you the amount for straight ribbon fabric wrapping the object. Add 25 percent for the amount of 1/4 inch ribbon you will need to wrap your object of choice. Cut the ribbon.
- 2). Fold the ribbon in half to find the center. Start at one end of the object. Wrap the center of the ribbon around the object and bring both ends so that they touch each other on one side. When you do this weave you will create the diamond pattern on both sides of the object.
- 3). Turn the left ribbon to the right 180 degrees in a single fold so that the ribbon crosses down and to the right. Insert a small cardboard triangle into the fold and tuck it in tight. You will need 4 cardboard triangles per 1/4 inch of wrapping. The cardboard triangles remain part of the weave. Hold the twisted end of that ribbon with your fingers pressed against the object. Turn the right ribbon to the left 180 degrees in a single fold so that the ribbon crosses over the first ribbon, down and to the left. Insert a small cardboard triangle into the fold of that ribbon.
- 4). Bring both ribbons to the back side. Push up on the bottom of each ribbon to press it tight against the first ribbon on the object. Pull on the ribbon ends as tight as possible to tighten the ribbon to the object. Clamp the ribbon sides to the object to hold the pressure on the ribbons.
- 5). Turn the right ribbon to the left 180 degrees in a single fold so that the ribbon crosses over the first ribbon, down and to the left. You are now working on the reverse side of the object. Insert a small cardboard triangle into the fold of that ribbon. Hold the ribbon tight. Turn the left ribbon to the right 180 degrees in a single fold so that the ribbon crosses down and to the right. Insert a small cardboard triangle into the fold and tuck it in tight.
- 6). Bring both ribbons back to the front side. Push up on the bottom of each ribbon to press it tight against the first ribbon on the object. Pull on the ribbon ends as tight as possible to tighten the ribbon to the object. Clamp the ribbon sides to the object to hold the pressure on the ribbons. Continue alternating the side you start on. In this row on the front side you will start from the right, on the back side you will start from the left. Repeat this across the entire object.
- 7). Thread six strands of heavy duty thread through a curved mattress needle. Form a nickle-sized loop. This loop will become an oversized needle eye that allows you to use the needle with a flat ribbon. Tie a very secure double knot in the threads. The needle and thread loop are only used as a tool to help move the ribbon under the tight weave. They will not remain with the weave when you are done.
- 8). Find the end of the ribbon that would start your next row. Insert the end of the ribbon through the thread loop. Slide the needle under the center point of your last row on this side of the object. The needle should point toward the end of the object. Pull the ribbon through.
- 9). Place the end of the other ribbon through the thread loop. Insert the needle into the gap between the bottom edge of the last ribbon you pulled through and the top of the two ribbon set. The needle should point away from the end. Bring the needle up in the first diamond area and pull the needle and ribbon over the other ribbon, under the twisted section and out through the diamond.

Twist the same ribbon toward the middle twice so that the end of the ribbon faces the end of the object and the folded part of the ribbon makes an arrow shape pointing toward the center of the diamond. Place the end of the ribbon in the loop and slide the needle back under the center of the twist and to the side of the first ribbon. Hold the arrow shape in place and pull the ribbon through. Trim and tuck each ribbon under the cording to hide the ends after making sure the cording is tight.
