    • A hot tub is not a shower. Therefore, to keep the water in your hot tub clean and clear, it is necessary to shower before entering the hot tub. Showering will ensure that all soaps, shampoos, hair products, makeup, sweat, and deodorant are removed from your body before you enter the tub. Additionally, laundry detergents do not belong in the hot tub either. Therefore, it is also essential that your bathing suit not contain any residual laundry soap from being washed. To help ensure almost all laundry soap has been removed from clothing, bathing suits should be run through the rinse cycle during the washing process at least twice. Taking these steps will help control the maintenance time of changing the hot tub water.

    Water Maintenance

    • Putting fresh water in the hot tub is a necessary part of hot tub ownership. However, this does not have to occur as frequently if simple maintenance is performed. Levels of pH and chlorine should be checked daily to ensure they fall between the recommended ranges. If the readings are abnormal, the problem should be treated immediately by administering products to the hot tub such as chlorine tabs or a pH balancer. If the water appears to be foaming, use an anti-foaming product to eliminate the foam from the water. If you replace the water in the hot tub with new water, this water's pH and chlorine levels should be checked as well and balance if necessary.

Another way to ensure you keep the water clean and to prevent the need for water change is to keep the air control valves closed. These are the valves that allow air to pass into the water and create the bubbling effect of the hot tub. The more these are left on, the more chance there is for debris to enter the water through the jet system and empty into the tub. Therefore, this system should be kept closed when the hot tub is not in use.

    Filter Care and Cover

    • Hot tub owners should also ensure good filter care. This includes making sure that the filter for the tub is sitting completely in the filter compartment. This will guarantee that the device is filtering 100 percent of the water passing through and eliminating most debris. If the filter is not completely sitting in the filter compartment, less than 100 percent of the water is being filtered and the debris from the water stays in the hot tub and creates dirty water. Dirty water requires more maintenance to get it right again.

You should also ensure that the cover is placed back on the hot tub at the end of each use. Not only do hot tub covers keep debris from outside blowing into the tub, but the cover also helps to prolong the longevity of the other mechanical parts of your unit. This includes the heating unit and air system within the tub.
