    • 1). Make a budget for your inground swimming pool. You should know how much you can afford and how much you're willing to spend on this project. Be sure you don't go over your budget. Choosing an inground pool is an exciting process, and it's easy to get carried away with extras. But it's definitely not worth going into debt. Share your budget with any company or pool installer you speak with. Make sure they know up front how much you can spend on your new inground swimming pool.

    • 2). Choose the style you want for your inground swimming pool. Your new inground pool will either be vinyl, fiberglass, or concrete. Research the costs involved, advantages, and disadvantages for each style. For example, a vinyl style tends to be the cheapest option, but it doesn't have the design possibilities of concrete and fiberglass. The styles can be researched online or by asking swimming pool companies for more information about each option.

    • 3). Decide what size and shape you want your new inground pool to be. If you want a custom-designed shape, concrete or fiberglass is probably the best way to go. Check out the variety of shapes that inground pools typically come in, and figure out what the best option would be for the space where you plan to construct the inground pool. Many companies will custom design an inground pool to fit the exact size and shape you want.

    • 4). Research contractors very extensively before choosing one to construct your inground swimming pool. Inground swimming pool installers range from highly respected professionals to dishonest salespeople trying to make a quick buck. Before hiring an installer, ask about the company's history, check out their record with the Better Business Bureau, and ask for references. Be sure the installer is fully licensed and bonded, has adequate insurance, and provides a warranty. The company should also have a certified service professional, or CSP, on staff that you can talk with. Be wary of any company that refuses to provide any of this information.
