How to Fix the Liner on an Above-Ground Pool

    • 1). Determine if there is an actual leak in your pool. This is a common occurrence most often caused by liner age, cold weather, or rocks protruding through the pool bottom. Liners are made in 20 mm thickness on average and are designed to resist punctures, but are not immune to them. If more than an inch of water is added to the pool each week, the probability of a leak is high.

    • 2). Detect the exact leaking spot. Walk around the pool to see if any water is leaking out and making the outside wall or the ground wet. Check the pool bottom and around any ladders to see if the liner has torn. You may need to go underwater to determine if the liner has an abrasion. If the leak is large enough, air bubbles may be visible. Food coloring can also determine a leak because the colored water will move toward any openings.

    • 3). Cut a piece of the liner to fit over the hole from the patch kit. Make it slightly larger than the leak spot to ensure complete coverage. Use a piece of sandpaper to rough up the side of the patch that will touch the liner. Spread the vinyl cement that's included in the patch kit on the rough side of the patch and place it over the hole. Just a small dab of the cement will work. The patch can be attached even if the leak is surrounded by water, so there is no need to drain the pool.

    • 4). Smooth out any air bubbles behind or around the patch. This will help the cement properly set up and dry. Avoid disturbing the area so the patch does not come loose. A correctly installed patch should fix the leak and stay in place on the liner for the remainder of the pool's lifetime.
