    • 1). Attach a luring light or large flash light to your boat. Use a boat without a motor, such as a sailboat or canoe to avoid spooking the flying fish. Sailboats with white sails are known to attract flying fish when they have a light attached to them. Flying fish are caught during nighttime hours when the lights are apparent to the fish.

    • 2). Take your boat to a location where flying fish are known to inhabit, such as the open water near Catalina Island off the coast of California. Other locations include the island of Barbados and off the coast of Japan. Talk to fishermen in these areas to find the choice spots for the fish.

    • 3). Use a handheld fishing net to catch the fish as they fly towards the light on your boat. If you are in a large enough boat, the fish might simply land on the boat if there is a light attached. Place the fish in a holding tank or in the bottom of your canoe until you return to the shore.
