- 1). Obtain a Texas state issued hunting license from Texas Parks and Wildlife online. You can also get a hunting license sporting goods stores, hunting outfitter stores, bait and tackle shops, and at numerous other places in Texas. - 2). Locate the Axis deer herds which are typically in grassland areas. The deer--who usually graze on native Texas grasses such as paspalum, switchgrass, or little bluestem--tend to prefer grassy plains typically over 10 centimeters high. The deer are typically found in herds of 100 or more, and do not prefer the rugged western terrain.
- 3). Locate the wild hog roosting areas. These hogs are usually found in large numbers in the Texas panhandle region, where they are considered a nuisance because they destroy farmland. You can usually find them near the outskirts of farmland, in low bushy regions, or areas where low vegetation provides cover. The hogs aren't picky eaters--you can find them near any readily available food source.
- 4). Obey all Texas private posting signs. If you're on private land, you must obtain written permission from the landowner to hunt on the land.
- 5). Stalk quietly and stealthily. Feral pigs and Axis deer spook quite easily and will retreat instantly. Follow the patterns of foraging for a few days prior to setting out on the hunt.
