How to Make Trench Terrain

    • 1). Plan your trench system. Study trench maps from the conflict you intend to simulate. Most trench systems include narrow passageways and larger open areas, with several lines of defensive trenches connected by communicating trenches. You should also decide whether you want modular trenches or to build a permanent terrain board.

    • 2). Cut the shape of your trench out of insulation foam using a craft knife. If you are making a permanent board, this will be cut into a large sheet of thick foam that makes up the board itself, while modular terrain will be made from free-standing pieces. For modular terrain, you will also want to shape the outer sides of the trench into a gentle slope. Make sure the parapet of the trench is low enough that your figures can just peek out over it and the trench is wide enough to place figures in.

    • 3). Apply filler to the foam surface with a putty knife or stick to give it a rough, natural texture rather than a smooth foam texture. Allow the filler time to set.

    • 4). Cut craft sticks or tongue depressors to length to make flooring for the trench and revetment for its walls. Glue them into place with PVA glue.

    • 5). Paint your trench with acrylic paints. Begin with a dark-colored base coat, then lightly brush a lighter color onto the surface in order to bring out the highlights.

    • 6). Embellish the trench with accessories. Cut thin card to make signs and use spare miniatures or parts to represent casualties or stores of equipment and ammunition.

    • 7). Coat your terrain in varnish to protect it during play. Allow the varnish plenty of time to dry before moving your model.
