How to Adjust a Baitcaster
- 1). Attach your lure to your line and reel out so that it is 4 inches from the rod tip.
- 2). Press the thumb bar, the small bar at the bottom of the spool that allows you to cast, and look for movement of the lure.
- 3). Adjust the the round knob on the side of the reel, known as the clutch, until the lure falls slowly but steadily. Turn the clutch counterclockwise if the lure is not falling, and clockwise if the lure is falling too fast.
- 4). Wear a glove and slowly pull on the line. Check whether the line pulls too slowly, causing you to jerk on it, or flows out too easily, unwinding even after you stop pulling.
- 5). Adjust the drag by turning the star-shaped wheel on the side of the spool counterclockwise if you are tugging in jerks, or clockwise if the line is too loose.
