How to Change the Look of Laminate Countertops
- 1). Clean the surface thoroughly to make sure you get rid of any dirt and debris. You can use baking soda and water to give the counters a good cleaning. Remove the sink and any fixtures that are attached to the countertops. Use painter's tape to protect objects or walls you do not want the paint to touch.
- 2). Use fine sandpaper to lightly sand the surface of your laminate countertops. For the sandpaper, you should consider 120-grit. Don't press too hard during the sanding; simply apply gentle pressure. Your goal is to scruff up the surface so that it will accept the paint.
- 3). Apply a primer coat onto your laminate countertops with a standard paintbrush. Use a type of primer that is safe to use on laminate. An example is Zinsser B-I-N. The primer is alcohol-based, so you should leave it for an hour to set. Open any doors and windows to ventilate the area.
- 4). Paint the laminate countertops with a finish coat that is safe to use with the material. You can use a paintbrush, roller or sponge to apply this coat. An example of a type of paint you can use on laminate is Aqua-Tile Water Base Epoxy, available in multiple colors.
- 5). Allow the paint to dry on the countertops for a full day. If you wish to apply another finishing coat, you can do so at this time.
