How to Make a Fishing Crankbait
- 1). Draw a circle on the wood board with a diameter of 1 1/2 inches, using a compass. Position a second radius 1 1/2 inches away from the radius of the first. Draw a circle with a 1/2-inch diameter around it.
- 2). Draw a straight line between the two radii using a ruler as a straightedge. Divide the line in half and mark the center. Draw an X on the line, 1 inch from the center, toward the large circle.
- 3). Place the radial leg of the compass on the X. Place the pencil of the compass on the top of the perimeter of the small circle. Draw an arch from the small circle to the top of the perimeter of the larger circle.
- 4). Place the spine of a carpenter's square on the line, the right angle edge butted up against the X. Draw a second X positioned 1 1/2 inches below the first. Place the radial leg of the compass on the X.
- 5). Draw a second arch from the bottom perimeter of the small circle to the bottom of that of the larger. The curve of the second arch is parallel to that of the first. The arches constitute the top and bottom of the lure: The larger circle is the head, and the smaller circle is the tail end of the lure.
- 6). Cut the lure's shape out of the wood with a band saw. Follow the lines of the arches and the perimeter of the circles. Do not cut around the circles in the area between the arches; instead, only cut around the two outside crescents of the circles, following the top and bottom arches from one circle to the next.
- 7). Draw a line from the radius of the larger circle down to the perimeter at a 30-degree angle in relation to the centerline. Draw two more lines, one on each side of the first, both 1/8 inches away from it. Cut the centerline and everything in between the two outside lines out of the lure -- from the perimeter to the radius -- with a reciprocating saw in order to make a mouth for the diving spoon.
- 8). Put wood glue on the tail of the diving spoon, and slide it into the mouth of the lure. Drill two 1/16-inch holes into the lure -- the first into the back of the tail, the second 1 1/4 inch from the tail into the belly. Thread a stainless steel screw eye connected to a treble hook into each hole.
- 9). Sand the edges of the lure. Remove the 90-degree angles created when you cut the lure out of the board. Sand the edges of both sides into soft rounded curves.
