How to Nail a Hip Rafter
- 1). Inspect the ridge boards running across the top of the roof. Verify that they are nailed down properly and secured in place to the studs underneath.
- 2). Measure with a tape measure the hip rafter board you are going to install. Check that it is the proper length and cut it to size with a circular saw, if necessary.
- 3). Measure to the exact center of the ridge board and mark the location with a pencil. Line up the first hip rafter at a 45-degree angle on the ridge board. Place a protractor at the angle location of the rafter and move it until it is at a 45-degree angle.
- 4). Push a rafter tie up on either side of the rafter. Press one side into the ridge board and the other into the hip rafter. Line up a roofing nail at the pre-made hole in the rafter tie and hammer it into place. Repeat the process for all of the other holes in the rafter tie.
- 5). Line up a rafter tie on the other side of the hip rafter and install it in the same manner. Measure down 24 inches and line up the second hip rafter. Install it just as the first was installed and continue in the same manner all the way around the ridge until the hip rafters are completely installed.
