    • 1). Place the tip of a measuring tape on the left outside edge of the left stringer on the bottom step. Stretch the tape to the right outside edge of the right stringer. Add 1 inch to the measurement to obtain the step's width.

    • 2). Measure and mark a 2-by-12-inch board with a carpenter's pencil at the width measurement. Cut the board on the marking with a circular saw.

    • 3). Place the board on the bottom while centering it between each of the stringers. There will be 1/2-inch overhang on each side of the stringers.

    • 4). Place a stainless steel screw on the left side rear of the bottom tread, aligning it with the stringer underneath the tread. Screw the fastener into the tread and through the stringer below with a drill containing a screw bit. Screw two more screws in the left side of the tread, placing one in the middle and one near the front of the tread over the stringer. Repeat this process to attach the right side of the tread to the right stringer.

    • 5). Repeat this procedure to measure, cut and attach each stair tread from the bottom up to the top of the stairway.
