Potting Instructions for Water Garden Plants
- 1). Fill half of the fabric pot with aquatic potting soil. According to The Water Garden, clay garden soil can also be used successfully. Sand may be used if the plant is fairly short.
- 2). Place one aquatic plant in the fabric pot. Plant only one aquatic plant per pot. Aquatic plants need room to grow.
- 3). Hold the aquatic plant straight up and fill the remainder of the pot with soil, stopping about 2 inches from the top.
- 4). Fertilize your plant. Follow the manufacturer's directions for your size aquatic plant. Be careful not to give the plant too much fertilizer.
- 5). Place a 1-inch layer of pea gravel on top of the potting soil. The pea gravel will prevent the soil from washing out of the top of the pot.
- 6). Place the potted plant into the pond. Marginal aquatic plants should only be submerged about 2 to 3 inches deep. Use the pond ledge to keep the plants from sitting at the bottom of the pond. If you have no pond ledge, use bricks or a plastic bowl to raise the aquatic plant out of the water. Water lilies can be placed at the bottom of the pond.
