Painting Laminate Cabinets
- 1). Clean the cabinet surfaces, using a degreasing cleaner and a cloth. The cleaner will break up surface buildup so that the primer will adhere.
- 2). Remove the cabinet faces, using a screwdriver. Removing the cabinet doors makes it easier to paint them and get into the hard-to-reach areas. Place the screws you have removed in a safe area so that you can use them to reattach the doors.
- 3). Sand the surfaces lightly, using sandpaper. The smooth laminate must be roughed up by sandpaper so that the primer can adhere well.
- 4). Apply the primer according to the manufacturer's directions. An alcohol-based primer will speed drying time since the alcohol evaporates and cures the primer. The primer may come in a spray can; otherwise, use a paintbrush or roller.
- 5). Paint the cabinets, using a brush or roller. Cover all exposed area and work in long smooth, strokes. Allow the paint to thoroughly dry. Some paints may need a second coat for full coverage. Allow the paint to dry after appying a second coat.
- 6). Reassemble the cabinets. If the paint is not entirely cured, the doors may stick to the cabinet and remove the paint.
