How to Knit a Rug Out of T-Shirts
- 1). Lay the T-shirt flat. Cut off the bottom band with scissors, then cut across the body of the shirt, just beneath the armpits. You will be left with a fabric tube.
- 2). Fold the tube in half, lengthwise. Do not bring the two edges evenly together; the bottom edge should stick out 1 inch farther than the top, leaving you with a slight margin on the left side.
- 3). Cut the fabric from right to left, all the way to the edge of the top part of the fold. Leave the extra inch of fabric on the left edge intact.
- 4). Unfold the fabric, and cut the entire tube into a spiral. When you reach a connected section, cut it at a diagonal angle. The cuts you made previously will keep your spiral, and thus your T-shirt yarn, at an even thickness.
- 5). Pull the length of the cut strip in sections, giving it a strong tug every few inches. When you tug it, the edges of the fabric will curl in on themselves, making it look like yarn. Roll each cut T-shirt into a ball.
- 6). Cast on 50 stitches with size 11 needles. For a wider rug, cast on more stitches; for a thinner one, cast on less.
- 7). Knit until you reach the end of the first ball of yarn. Attach the next ball at the edge, tying the new and old yarn in a knot just as you would when joining a new skein of any other yarn.
- 8). Knit until your rug is as long as you want it to be. Bind off, and weave the tails into your knitting with your fingers.
