    • 1). Wash, dry and iron the fabric before beginning the quilt. Cut any long lengths of quilt top fabric into manageable lengths. Fold each piece in half, selvages and raw edges matching and right sides together.

    • 2). Measure and cut out enough fabric squares to construct the quilt top using a cutting mat and rotary fabric cutter and a ruler or quilter's square as a guide. Add one-half inch to each block size for seam allowances before cutting.

    • 3). Arrange the quilt blocks in a satisfactory pattern on the floor, then pin and stitch a row of blocks together using a quarter-inch seam. Backstitch each seam at the beginning and end to lock the stitches. Press each seam open. Pin and stitch the rows together using a quarter- inch seam, pressing the seams open after each addition.

    • 4). Measure the height of the quilt top, then cut two matching lengths of backing fabric and cut off the selvage edges. Cut one piece of fabric in half lengthwise. Pin one length of the cut fabric to either side of the main piece lengthwise and trim the long edges to the correct width of the quilt top plus one-half inch. Stitch the side panels to the main piece of fabric using half-inch seams and press the seams flat.

    • 5). Square up the quilt top and backing using a quilter's square and rotary fabric cutter. Lay the quilt top and backing smoothly on the floor, right sides facing. Center the quilt batting on top of the backing.

    • 6). Pin the layers together and double-stitch a half-inch double seam around the outside edges, leaving a 16-inch gap open at the bottom center of the quilt. Cut off the corner seam allowances close to the stitching, then turn the quilt right side out through the gap,

    • 7). Iron the quilt, turning under and pinning the open seam at the bottom of the quilt even with the finished edge. Stitch another seam close to the edge around the entire quilt, making sure the bottom opening is stitched closed.

    • 8). Thread a large-eyed needle with about eight inches of knitting yarn, pulling the ends even. Lay the quilt flat on the floor and insert the needle through the quilt layers, starting at the center of the piece. Bring the needle back out about one-quarter inch from the insertion point. Double knot the yarn and trim the ends from one-half to three-quarters of an inch long. Repeat the process at measured intervals until the entire piece is knotted.
