    • 1). Identify the area prone to damaging water collection, such as at a structure's foundation or basement wall, then identify where to divert the excess water. Measure the distance with a tape measure and calculate how much tile to purchase.

    • 2). Dig down to the base of the foundation or basement wall with a shovel, then dig a 3-foot-wide, slightly downward-sloping trench from the beginning of the base of the foundation or basement wall to the area designated for water collection.

    • 3). Lay the perforated field tile (pipe) at the bottom of the trench, from the beginning of the trench all the way to the water collection area. Join multiple lengths of perforated field tile with plastic couplings or shorten lengths with a hacksaw.

    • 4). Cover the perforated field tile with a layer of gravel, and fill the designated water collection area with gravel to create a drainage pit or drain field.

    • 5). Cut lengths of landscaping fabric with scissors to fit inside the trench and lay it over the gravel from the beginning of the field tile to its end.

    • 6). Back fill the trench with soil.
