How to Measure Square Footage If an Area Is Curvy

104 13
    • 1). Measure the straight sides of the area using a tape measure.

    • 2). Use a string or rope to outline the curvy portions. Mark the string and measure the length of the curved segment.

    • 3). Draw a scale representation of the area on a piece of graph paper. Use a simple scale, such as 0.5 inches per foot or 1 cm per foot.

    • 4). Section the drawing into rectangles, squares, triangles, half-circles and possibly whole circles.

    • 5). Figure the individual area for each figure on your drawing by using the following formulas:
      Square/rectangle = length x width
      Triangle = (base x height) / 2
      Circle = square the radius (radius is 1/2 of the diameter or width of the circle) and multiply that by 3.14
      Half Circle = square the radius and multiply it by 3.14; then divide your answer by 2

    • 6). Add all of the individual areas together to get the total square footage.
