How to Pull a Section of Carpet Up After a Water Leak
- 1). Remove as much moisture from the carpet as possible with a wet/dry vacuum.
- 2). Lift up the baseboard or molding that's holding the section of carpet down. It may be necessary to break the seal between the paint and the baseboard with a utility knife.
- 3). Insert a pry bar gently in between the molding or baseboard and the wall to lift it up. Use a putty knife if the gap isn't large enough for a pry bar. Slip a piece of cardboard in between the wall and the putty knife or pry bar to prevent scratching the wall.
- 4). Wear heavy duty work gloves, since the tackless strips that hold carpet down are sharp.
- 5). Pull out any staples in the carpet padding with needle-nose pliers if it's fastened in this manner. Otherwise, just lift it up. It is important to dry out the padding as well, to prevent mold and mildew growth.
- 6). Set the carpet and padding sections up on concrete blocks, bricks or other sturdy objects to aid the ventilation. If you are removing the section permanently, cut it out with a utility knife.
- 7). Run ceiling or oscillating fans at high speed to hasten the drying process. Many insurance companies provide high-powered fans for their clients.
