T-Shirt Transfer Instructions

    Printing

    • You need an inkjet printer, not a laser one, to print onto T-shirt transfer sheets. The front side of the transfer paper is coated white, and the back side has lines or a logo on it. Insert the transfer sheet into the printer's paper tray so it will print on the front side; this usually means placing it so the back side is on top while in the tray. Practice on a regular sheet of paper if you are not sure which way to insert the paper. Next, you need to flip the T-shirt image. It needs to be printed backward, or else it will appear backward when you iron the transfer onto the shirt. The application that you're viewing the image on might have a command to invert the image. When using the "Print" command, it may also give you a "mirror" option to flip it over. After printing, wait for the page dry before transferring it to the shirt, and don't stack another transfer sheet onto it.

    Ironing

    • Trim away parts of the transfer sheet without the printed image, but leave one corner so you can peel away the backing after ironing. Let the iron preheat for five minutes on its cotton setting, and don't set it on steam or spray. Find a flat, sturdy surface---an ironing board is often not sturdy enough---and cover it with a pillowcase. Lay the shirt flat on the pillowcase and make sure it has no wrinkles, creases or moisture. Place the transfer sheet face-down on the shirt. Place the iron onto the top left corner of the sheet, making sure the iron overlaps the sheet's edge, and iron the sheet across its long side. Time this so you go from one end of the sheet to the other in about 15 seconds, and press down as you iron. Repeat this for any part of the sheet you didn't iron over, then iron over the whole sheet in circular motions for two minutes. Cover every part of the sheet, especially the edges and corners. Peel off the backing of the sheet when you are done; if you want the transfer to have a "glossy" feel, wait for it to cool before peeling off the backing.
