How to Make Bodysuits

    • 1). Place a tank top and tight-fitting pants on paper. Trace around the clothing and cut it out to create a pattern for the bodysuit.

    • 2). Measure the pattern. Double the measurement to account for the front and the back of the bodysuit, and increase the measurement by several inches to allow for a margin of error. Use this measurement when purchasing the fabric.

    • 3). Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, smoothing out any wrinkles.

    • 4). Pin the pattern to the fabric, making sure pins go through both layers.

    • 5). Cut through both layers of fabric 1/2 to 1 inch larger than the pattern to allow for seams and adjustments. Unpin the pattern, and turn the fabric inside out.

    • 6). Sew the seams together one inch from the edges with a stretch stitch on the sewing machine. Start with the inside of the legs. These seams will be the least visible and serve as places to practice until you are accustomed to working with the fabric.

    • 7). Continue sewing, stitching together one outside seam from the bottom of the legs to the bottom of the armholes. Repeat with the other side. Stitch together the front and back of the top of the suit on one side. Repeat with the other side.

    • 8). Fold back the fabric of the leg openings and hem them to create a finished look. For the hem, use a topstitch with a double needle. Repeat with the arm openings and the neckline. Turn the bodysuit rightside out.

    • 9). Try on the bodysuit. If any areas are too tight or too loose, remove stitches with seam rippers. Adjust the bodysuit accordingly, using extra fabric included at the seams when needed. Stitch it up again.

Test fit and adjust as necessary. Cut out any additional fabric remaining at the seams when you are satisfied with the fit.
