How to Install Crown Molding on an Angle
- 1). Line up a protractor at the first angle on the wall. Write down the angle measurement taken from the protractor. Most outside corner measurements are 90 degrees. Measure the length of the first piece of crown molding and mark the cut line with a pencil. Draw a straight line across the crown.
- 2). Turn the piece of molding upside down so the thicker side is propped up against the fence of the saw and the thinner side is resting on the bottom of the miter saw. Slide it into the saw and turn the blade of the saw to half of the recorded angle measurement in either direction. If the measurement was 90 degrees, turn the saw to 45 degrees in either direction.
- 3). Line up the blade of the saw with the mark on the crown molding. Turn on the saw and pull down carefully on the lever. Cut straight through the molding at the mark. Release the lever to stop the blade from turning. Remove the molding from the saw.
- 4). Cut the second piece at 45 degrees in the opposite direction. Measure and mark the piece just like the first one and cut it to size with the miter saw. Butt the two pieces together on the wall at the corner. Place the thicker end on the ceiling and the thinner side on the wall.
- 5). Insert finishing nails along the top and bottom of the molding with a nail gun. Spread out the nails every four inches at both the top and bottom. Insert three equally spaced nails at each corner where the crown meets. Cover up the nail holes with wood putty. Dab the putty over the holes with a putty knife and wipe away the excess with a rag.
