How to Cover Plaster & Lath Walls With Joint Compound
- 1). Lay plastic drop cloths on the floor to protect it from the joint compound.
- 2). Place joint compound in the middle of the drywall pallet, leaving 3 or 4 inches of the pallet empty all the way around it.
- 3). Start at one end of a wall at the top corner. Take some joint compound off the pallet with the trowel so only 2/3 of the edge of the trowel is covered with joint compound. Smooth the joint compound onto the wall with the trowel. Use long even sweeps with the trowel and make the joint compound as smooth as possible. Use the edge of the trowel to remove excess joint compound and smooth out high areas.
- 4). Work your down and across the wall. Use the narrow end of the trowel to get along edges and into corners. Let the joint compound dry for at least 24 hours before painting or wallpapering. Use a drywall sanding sponge to sand areas that need it.
