    • Chimney mortar forms an adhesive paste that, when spread across bricks, can allow you to construct a durable, long-lasting chimney.

    History

    • Lime was used in the mortar for the entire chimney until the 1800s, when clay was introduced for economic reasons.

    Warning

    • Chimney mortar that is cracked and damaged can let in moisture, causing mold and mildew to grow in your chimney.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Old and cracked mortar can be chipped off and replaced with new mortar to inexpensively lengthen the life of your chimney.

    Fun Fact

    • Freshly applied chimney mortar will take about 30 days to cure and should have a waterproofing product applied to it.
