    • 1). Pull nails out of scrap wood until you have at lease a dozen straight nails that are longer than 2 inches.

    • 2). Cut five identical planks that are each 8 inches long from some 1-inch thick nail-free scrap wood. Trim the five cut pieces so they have and equal width of 5 inches.

    • 3). Align the edge of two of the planks to form a right angle. Drive two nails down through the corners at the edge to connect the boards.

    • 4). Attach two more of the planks vertically next to the first to create a three-walled box with an open end.

    • 5). Nail the final plank to the loose ends of the planks at the open end of the box. Make sure the edges are all lined up so the box is sturdy.

    • 6). Drill a few small holes up through one of the narrow ends of the squirrel house. This allows for water drainage to keep squirrel food from rotting.

    • 7). Forage for acorns, grains and nuts to add to the base of the squirrel house. The fully assembled squirrel house has one open side for access to the food stash, a front porch for squirrels to stand on and an overhang roof for shade and rain protection.
