How to: Asphalt Roofing

    • 1). Don rubber-sole shoes to prevent yourself from slipping while working on your roof. Wear gloves and goggles to protect your eyes and hands from the materials with which you must work during the asphalt roofing project as well.

    • 2). Apply a self-adhesive asphalt roofing waterproof underlayment to your roof’s sheathing after purchasing it from a home supply or roof supply store. Place the underlayment along your roof’s eaves and valleys. Allow it to slope upward about two feet from your home’s exterior walls and stretch at least two feet past the outside walls, as this material prevents ice from building up on your roof’s edges and letting water drip under your new shingles, damaging your home’s interior.

    • 3). Lay a No. 15 asphalt-saturated felt underlayment down on the remainder of your roof, as this material temporarily protects your roof deck from rain before the asphalt shingles go on. With another individual’s help, unroll the underlayment and staple it down as you go.

    • 4). Nail down drip edges, which are corner-shaped metal strips, along the sides of the roof on top of the underlayment to allow water from the roof to flow off the edges instead of damaging your home’s siding. Install roof flashing, making it flush with the drip edges at the bottom of your roof’s valley. Nail the flashing every one foot along its edges to further protect your roof from water damage.

    • 5). Create a vertical chalk line down the center of the roof as a starting point. Trim the tabs off three-tab shingles that contain self-sealing adhesive strips, and lay them in a row, positioning them upward along the eave. Lay the next row of shingles in this fashion, and nail this second row flush with the first row, using at least four nails for each shingle.

    • 6). Create horizontal chalk lines across the roof to help lay the rest of the rows of shingles. Keep the rows of asphalt shingles as straight as possible as you lay and nail them down.
