    • 1). Spread a drop cloth over all the surfaces you want to protect, including counter tops and floors.

    • 2). Remove the hardware from the cabinets with a screwdriver. Store the screws and hinges in a safe place. Cover a flat work space with newspaper. Remove the drawers and doors from the cabinets and place them on the work surface.

    • 3). Wash the cabinet surfaces with a mild soap and water and allow them to dry.

    • 4). Hold any new hardware against the drawers and doors to make sure the existing holes line up with the new pieces. Fill the holes left by the drawer pulls on the drawers and the handles on the cabinet doors with putty if the existing holes cannot be reused.

    • 5). Sand all the wood surfaces with a powered palm sander. Use a piece of sandpaper in the areas that the palm sander cannot reach or cover. Continue sanding the wood until the surface appears dull and is smooth to the touch. Begin with rough sandpapers to remove varnish and the previous paint and change to progressively finer-grit papers until you achieve a smooth surface.

    • 6). Open and stir tinted primer until the color is smooth and consistent. Tinted primer adds a hint of color to the cabinets, so the green paint will show even color with fewer coats. White primer can be substituted if that is all that is available. Fill a paint tray with primer.

    • 7). Apply the primer onto the wooden surface with a paintbrush in the crevices and corners. Use a small paint roller on the flat surfaces for better coverage. Allow the primer to set until dry to the touch.

    • 8). Pour green paint into a clean paint tray. Paint the crevices and corners of the cabinets with green paint using a new, clean paintbrush. Paint the flat surfaces with a new, clean paint roller. Allow the green paint to dry.

    • 9). Apply a second coat of paint to the cabinets using the paintbrush and roller. Allow to dry.

Apply a third coat if needed to fully cover the cabinets. Allow to dry for 24 hours.

Load a clean paintbrush with varnish and apply it to the painted wood surfaces to protect the green finish. Fully cover all the painted surfaces with varnish. Allow to dry 48 hours before reinstalling the cabinet hardware, drawers and doors.
