Roof Algae Removal
- Remove any debris from the roof such as leaves. Brush these away with your scrub broom. Don't focus on cleaning away the algae just yet. Just prepare a clear area that you can walk on without tripping or slipping. This also clears the way for your oxygen bleach solution to cover all of the algae without any obstruction.
- Create an oxygen bleach solution with which to treat the roof algae. Oxygen bleach is safe to use for humans, animals and plants. Follow the instructions on your oxygen bleach container to determine the right proportions of powder and water for a full-strength solution.
Load the oxygen bleach solution into a pump sprayer. Use the pump sprayer to completely cover the affected area with oxygen bleach solution. Allow the oxygen bleach to penetrate for 10 to 15 minutes. The oxygen bleach will kill the algae. The algae will start to run off of your roof surface, making it prime for brushing. - Use the scrub broom to brush away the loosened dead algae. Add more solution to the algae if it has not loosened enough or it is not scrubbing away easily. Scrub until the algae buildup has completely separated and the roof surface looks clean. Hose the roof down to rinse the dead algae and oxygen solution suds. Reapply oxygen bleach solution and repeat the process if the roof surface is still stained with algae. While the algae will be dead, you may need multiple applications to completely remove staining.
- Wear shoes with good traction, as algae and the cleaning solution may make the roof slippery during the removal process.
Do not use chlorine bleach, as it is not only unsafe, but may discolor your roof.
Perform roof algae removal early in the morning, or when there is no excessive heat and direct sunlight. Excessive heat and direct sunlight may evaporate the oxygen bleach solution prematurely.
