How to Install Exterior Tile on a Concrete Slab
- 1). Cover the concrete slab in courses of flexible outdoor tiling underlayment, cutting the underlayment with your razor knife and setting it in tiling mortar, spread down with a notched trowel. Let the mortar set for a day.
- 2). Snap two intersecting lines over the surface of the underlayment, using your chalk snap line to divide the space into four square sections. Put a carpenter's square at the intersection of the two lines as you snap them to ensure they're square to each other.
- 3). Spread mortar over the center of the floor at the intersection with your notched trowel. Cover enough area to lay no more than four tiles.
- 4). Press the first four tiles into place in the mortar using the lines of the intersection as guides. Put spacers between the tiles.
- 5). Spread additional mortar and lay more tiles, working your way out along the lines and toward the edges of the area. Cut the tiles at the ends as needed on your tile cutter. Let the tiles set overnight.
- 6). Pull out the spacers. Spread grout over the surface of the tiles with a grout float, using the long edge of the float to scrape the mortar across the surface and force it into the spaces between the tiles. Use a damp sponge to wipe up the residual grout from the tile surface. Let the grout set for two days before stepping on the tiles.
