    • 1). Determine whether you need an underlayment. Do you have any imperfections on your flooring? If so, chances are you will need an underlayment. Underlayments allow for a better quality of floor. To install your underlayment, lay a ¼-inch sheet of plywood over your old flooring and screw down into the floor beneath. Use ¾-inch screws to fasten the plywood in place. Fill all screw holes and seams with a wood filler or leveling compound. Allow the wood filler or leveling compound to dry and sand the filled areas smooth. Remove all dust with a damp mop. Pry off any base trim using a hammer. Base trim is the trim that runs along the bottom of your floor and wall.

    • 2). Measure the length and width of the room that you are installing the sticky back tiles in. For example, a dining room may measure 14 feet long by 12 feet wide. Mark the 14 foot mark and the 12 foot mark with your pencil. Divide 14 feet by 2 resulting in 7 feet. Make a mark at 7 feet using your pencil. Divide 12 feet by 2 resulting in 6 feet. Make a mark at 6 feet using your pencil.

    • 3). Using your chalk line, position the line on your 7-foot mark. Pull the chalk line tight and lift the line gently. Snap the chalk line against the wood leaving a straight line across your floor. Position your chalk line at your 6-foot mark. Snap the chalk line against the wood leaving a line across your floor. You will end up with a cross on your floor. The exact middle of the cross is the center of your room.

    • 4). When applying the sticky back tile, you will want to start with the center of the room. This is because if any tiles need to be cut they will be less visible against your wall. Spread floor adhesive onto the floor using your putty knife. Make sure to spread only as much adhesive as you have flooring to cover, so you can complete the job within a 15 minute period. Remove the paper backing from a sticky back tile. Position the sticky back tile on the floor with the adhesive and gently push down into place.

    • 5). Continue laying your sticky back tiles working towards your walls. For any cuts that need to be made, use scissors or a vinyl cutter.
