How to Paint or Stain Steel Doors With a Grain Pattern
- 1). Clean your steel door with a rag soaked in acetone to remove any dirt or grease. Allow the door to dry.
- 2). Use painter's tape to cover any hardware or door knobs that will not be painted.
- 3). Paint two coats of primer on your steel door. Allow each coat to dry before applying another.
- 4). Apply two coats of latex paint. Allow each coat to dry before applying another.
- 5). Use a paintbrush to apply a thick coat of gel stain to the door.
- 6). Start at the top of the door and pull the rocker tool down, rocking it back and forth to create the wood grain look. Repeat for the entire door, trying to alternate your patterns to make it look natural.
- 7). Feather the stain by running a dry paintbrush over the lines lightly, while the stain is still wet. If you prefer a more subdued effect, you can also run sandpaper over the grain after it dries.
- 8). Cover the door with two coats of oil-based polyurethane, using a foam paintbrush, to protect the door from dirt and weather.
