How to Make Cloth Covered Papier Mache
- 1). Mix one part glue to three parts water in a large bucket. This will create a paste that is used to adhere the paper to the armature.
- 2). Tear off a thin strip of newspaper and dip it in the paste.
- 3). Lay the wet newspaper strip on the armature. Continue this process until you have covered the entire armature in a single layer.
- 4). Rip off more newspaper strips and lay them on top of the first layer. This dry layer will soak up some of the excess paste from the first layer. Build up a few more layers to strengthen the form of the papier mache creation.
- 5). Dip a piece of tissue in the paste and lay it on the armature. Continue covering the armature with tissue until you have a full layer all the way around the piece. The soft tissue allows you to create a smoother surface or add unique details.
- 6). Dip a piece of muslin in the paste and lay it over the tissue layer. Again cover the entire armature with muslin. When this layer dries it will be extremely stiff and will create a suitable surface for painting or other additional embellishment.
