How to Design a Kitchen Nook
- 1). Choose a décor for the nook that suits your home and your style. In particular, consider extending the décor scheme of your kitchen into the nook space. If you want to give the nook its own look, however, choose a design scheme that complements your kitchen's décor in order to create a cohesive look in the area.
- 2). Design a color palette for the area that is calming to you. Calming wall colors, including neutral tones and natural shades of light blues or greens, inspire cozy feelings and add warmth to an area, making it more inviting.
- 3). Take your nook's dimensions. Knowing how much room you have to play around with reduces your chance of selecting design elements that are too large or too small for the nook. These measurements also allow you to determine how much paint you'll need.
- 4). Purchase comfortable seating that complements your home's and nook's décor schemes. A nook can be equipped with built-in booth-style seating or decorated with a freestanding table and chairs; select the seating option that best suits your needs.
- 5). Add windows to your nook if possible. Natural lighting is especially pleasant within a nook, so add large windows if possible. Southern Living magazine suggests framing the windows with Roman shades rather than curtains as they filter, but do not block, natural light.
- 6). Install lighting in your nook. If your nook area lacks windows, create your own soft lighting with fixtures or lamps enhanced with tinted bulbs.
- 7). Add artwork to your nook that reflects your décor scheme. Choose simple, unobtrusive designs; busy or bold designs can overpower a small area. Look for paintings, photographs or other artwork that match your nook's color palette.
- 8). Install shelving for storage. Use your nook to the best of your abilities by adding in extra storage. For example, space beneath built-in benches could be turned into drawers that hold extra kitchen items while shelving installed along the walls could hold cookbooks or knickknacks.
