How to Seal Travertine Floors

    • 1). Remove all the furniture from the room and pull up any curtains that touch the floor.

    • 2). Sweep your unpolished travertine flooring using a brush broom and a dustpan. Follow up your sweeping with a good vacuum of the floor to insure that all debris is gone. Pay attention to debris next to baseboards and doorways. Use your vacuum cleaner's slender tipped attachment to remove sand and dust along the edges of the room.

    • 3). Clean your floor with a cleaner designed for travertine floors. After you have cleaned the floor, allow it to dry completely overnight.

    • 4). Fill up a spray bottle with warm water. Start at the upper left hand corner of your room spraying the floor to dampen it. Alternatively you can start in any area you like, as long as you work in a methodical manner without doubling back on yourself. Spray the entire floor.

    • 5). Put on your rubber gloves and protective knee pads. The knee pads should have gel or rubber support in them.

    • 6). Apply the sealer to the floor starting again at the upper left hand corner of the room working downward. You will need to do this on your hands and knees. Tip the sealant can slightly pouring out a few teaspoons of sealant at a time. Use an absorbent damp sponge to move the sealant around the floor. Apply sealant to the entire floor a section at a time.

    • 7). Allow the sealant to dry for 30 minutes, then examine the floor. Remove any excess sealant, using the sponge or some rags to dab it up. Use a teaspoon of sealant from your can to loosen sticky excess sealant, then dab at the spots.

    • 8). Let your floor rest for 48 hours at least. This is the curing stage. Your floor is ready to walk on when water spilled on the floor beads up.
