How to Make Antler Art
- 1). Get your antlers. You can get antlers from your hunter friends, luck out and find them at garage sales or thrift shops, or buy them online (see Resources).
- 2). Decide what you want to make. Examine the size, shape and configuration of the antlers. Move them around in several different directions to see if they are shaped for a particular object. Some will be obvious that they would make a perfect online of a person, dog or other animal or the stems for a bouquet of flowers. If all else fails, antlers always make good trees.
- 3). Prepare your antlers. Clean your antlers in warm, soapy water and allow to dry thoroughly. Use a fine sandpaper to sand off any rough spots or obvious imperfections. Cut with a saw if you need them to be smaller or in several pieces.
- 4). Start creating. Concentrate on one antler at a time and begin to transform it into your art. Let's say you did decide on a tree. Paint the antler with several colors that mimic tree bark or use paint pens to draw bark-like swirls and designs along the entire antler.
- 5). Add details. Once your antler is decorated to your satisfaction, add any extra details. For the tree, you'll want some leaves, which you can fashion out of clay, allow to dry and then paint green and glue on the antler tips. You also may want a squirrel to be scampering up the tree, in which case you can make a small squirrel out of clay and glue it to the trunk.
- 6). Make the base. For your antler tree to stand up straight, you'll need either a base or vase. You can make a base out of clay by rolling a lump of clay into a ball and sticking the antler through the middle. Add glue to bottom of the antler tree trunk to help secure it in place. You can also use a decorative vase, jar or even a painted tin can to help your antler tree stand upright. Fill the containers with gravel so the container doesn't fall over and the tree stays upright.
