How to Attach a Stair Rail to a Newel Post

    • 1). Measure the length of the staircase with a tape measure to determine how long of a railing you will need to use. You can find the length of the staircase by measuring from the top of floor or decking to the front edge of the bottom stair.

    • 2). Place the mounting bracket on the newel post where it will be mounted for the railing and mark its location with a pencil.

    • 3). Mark the location of the screw holes that are needed for the screws with the pencil.

    • 4). Drill the holes for the screws or bracket in the newel post using a power drill. Drill into the post the length of the screw or bolt.

    • 5). Place the bracket on the newel post by aligning it with the pencil mark and the pre-drilled screw holes.

    • 6). Insert screws into the pre-drilled screw holes and secure them with the power drill.

    • 7). Set the railing into place so that the end of the railing sits on the mounting bracket.

    • 8). Secure the railing by inserting screws into the mounting bracket and tightening them with a power drill or a screwdriver.
