    • 1). Dust over the backsplash with a cloth or dry sponge. If the backsplash has just been installed, it should be clean. If you are sealing the backsplash after it has been in use for some time, spot-cleaning with a damp sponge may be required. Remember, anything on the backsplash when you seal it will be sealed into the backsplash.

    • 2). Mask off the wall around the backsplash with painter's tape and place a drop cloth over the bench, sink or stovetop below the backsplash to protect it from any drips or mishaps.

    • 3). Mix the stone sealer as directed on the sealer label. Read the instructions carefully and follow all details.

    • 4). Dip the paintbrush into the sealer and apply it over the stone backsplash in even, long strokes. Overlap the brushstrokes so you are painting on a wet edge. Leave the sealer to absorb into the stone, then wipe off the excess with a rag before the sealer dries.

    • 5). Let the backsplash fully set for the amount of time stipulated by the sealer directions -- it can be up to three days.

    • 6). Remove the drop cloth and painter's tape from the backsplash surrounds.
