- 1). Place two pieces of 36-inch 2-by-4 and two pieces of the 20-inch 2-by-4 in a rectangle with the 2-inch sides of the boards resting on the building surface. The longer pieces should be in between the shorter ones and pushed to the outside edges. Screw these pieces together by driving wood screws through the shorter pieces of the 2-by-4 into the ends of the longer ones.
- 2). Measure along the inside of the longer side of the wooden frame 1 inch and make a mark. Place a piece of 18-inch 1-by-1 inside the frame at that mark. Screw the 1-by-1 to the frame by driving a screw through the 2-by-4 frame into the 1-by-1.
- 3). Repeat Step 3 for the remaining pieces of 1-by-1, making sure they are spaced 1 inch apart and attached to the inside of the frame by a screw through the 2-by-4 into the edges of each piece.
- 4). Place a piece of 18-inch 2-by-4 on the building surface so that the 4-inch side is down. Place two pieces of 15-inch 2-by-4 on top of the 18-inch piece so they are at right angles to the 18-inch piece and and sticking straight up. Screw these pieces together by driving two screws from the bottom piece into the edge of the 15 inch pieces. This is a base for your bench.
- 5). Repeat Step 4 and build two more base pieces in the same manner.
- 6). Place the bench top on the flat surface upside down so the slats are on the building surface. Place one of the base pieces in the frame at each end of the bench. Screw the base pieces to the frame by driving screws through the 2-by-4 in the frame and into the base piece legs.
- 7). Measure 18 inches along the longer edge of the frame and make a mark. Place the third base piece into the frame at this mark. Screw it to the frame by driving screws through the 2-by-4 of the frame and into the base legs. Turn the bench over to sit on it.
