- 1). Wash the paneling with a solution of 1/2 cup of all-purpose cleaner and 1 gallon water. Allow the paneling to air-dry for 24 hours.
- 2). Lightly sand the paneling with a medium to fine grade sandpaper. Wrap the paper around a sanding block and rough the surface of the paneling to give the primer and paint a surface to adhere. Wipe the walls with a clean cloth to remove sanding dust from the paneling.
- 3). Tape the trim around the paneling with blue painter's tape to prevent smudges and over painting on trim areas. Apply tape around doors, windows, and baseboards to provide a clean edge.
- 4). Apply an oil-based primer with a paintbrush to the knots in the paneling. Allow the primer to soak into the crevices of the knotty areas.
- 5). Roll a coat of oil-based primer onto the entire paneling area to be painted. Use a high quality paint roller to provide a smooth finish. Brush primer into the grooves and crevices, then roll the area smooth. Allow the primer to dry for 24 hours.
- 6). Paint the walls with a roller. Brush paint into the wood grooves of the paneling and along knots and cracks. Roll over the area to provide a smooth finish to the paint. Allow the paint to dry, then apply a second coat to the paneling for a long-lasting, updated finish.
