How to Fold an Origami Butterfly

    • 1). Lay the paper flat on the table, with a long edge facing you. If you are using origami paper with one white side and one colored side, face the white side up.

    • 2). Fold the paper in half, bringing the bottom of the paper to the top edge. Crease and unfold this. Fold the paper in half again, bringing the right hand edge to meet the left edge. Crease and unfold.

    • 3). Fold the paper in half diagonally each way. Bring the bottom left corner to meet the top right corner. Crease and unfold. Bring the bottom right corner to meet the top left corner. Crease and unfold this, too.

    • 4). Fold the bottom right corner in so that the corner touches the center of the paper, created when you made the previous creases. Fold the other three corners in as well, so that all four corners touch in the center.

    • 5). Flip the paper over. Fold each corner in again, in the same way as you did in Step 4. Your model is now a smaller square.

    • 6). Open the paper completely, unfolding every fold, so that you are left with the original paper, white side up, now creased in many places.

    • 7). Fold the left hand edge in so that it lies along the centerline. Fold the right hand edge in to meet the centerline as well. Your model now looks like a rectangle, filled with creases that create eight squares, four on each side. Each square has a diagonal crease running through it.

    • 8). Pull the top four squares open, pushing the top two squares flat as you do, collapsing the top of the paper. Your model looks like a house with a flat roof. Collapse the bottom four squares in the same way, pulling them up and in, so that the top and bottom edges of the model meet at the centerline. Your model now looks like an angular oval.

    • 9). Fold the model in half by folding the top half of the paper behind the bottom half.

Fold the right hand corner of the top layer of paper down at an angle, so that the right edge lies along the centerline. Fold the left corner in and to the right at an angle, so it too lies along the centerline.

    • 11

Fold each outside corner of the edges that you had just folded in toward the middle of the paper. The corners should not quite touch the middle.

    • 12

Fold the model in half, bringing the right hand edge to meet the left hand edge. Fold the top wing, the right wing, of the butterfly back to the right at an angle. Fold the other wing to match, creating the butterfly's body between the wings.

Open the wings of the butterfly.
