How to Varnish Hardwood Floors
- 1). Thoroughly clean the floor with floor cleanser and a mop. Let it dry for 48 hours.
- 2). Go over the whole floor with a hammer and nailset, sinking any nail heads that are sticking up.
- 3). Buff the whole surface of the floor by hand with fine-grit sandpaper. Sand it with the direction of the wood grain, with very light, quick strokes, just enough to dull the existing surface.
- 4). Wipe down the floor with tack cloths to take up the dust from the sanding.
- 5). Open and stir your varnish gently, to avoid bubbling. Starting in the far corner from the entrance, brush the varnish onto the floorboards with a finish brush. Brush with the direction of the boards, in slow, careful strokes, to avoid the formation of bubbles. Do the whole floor.
- 6). Let the varnish dry for 12 hours. Hand-sand the dried varnish surface as before, using fine-grit sandpaper and sanding very lightly, just enough to dull the shine. Wipe up the dust with tack cloths.
- 7). Apply a second coat of varnish in the same manner as the first. Let it dry, buff with sandpaper, clean up the dust, and brush on a third layer. Don't sand the third layer. Let the third layer cure for 48 hours before walking on it.
