    • 1). Spread thin-set mortar over your tiling area with the notched trowel. Lay down enough adhesive for the river rocks to adhere, but not so much that they sink into it. Apply only 3 square feet of adhesive at a time.

    • 2). Press the river rock sheets firmly into the adhesive. Place the sheets closely together. Tap the tile sheets lightly with a rubber mallet, without sinking them into the adhesive. Let the adhesive dry according to the manufacturer's directions.

    • 3). Spread a penetrating sealer over the tiles with a large sponge, according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Allow the sealer to dry.

    • 4). Smooth sanded grout over the sealed tiles, using a rubber float. Work the grout in 2--by-2-foot sections until the tiled area is completely covered. Allow the grout to dry for 30 minutes.

    • 5). Remove the majority of the grout from the surface of the river rock tiles, using a stiff-bristled brush. Wipe off the remaining grout with a wet sponge.

    • 6). Apply a second coat of penetrating sealer, using a sponge.
