How to Build a Particle Board Bed With Storage
- 1). Lay a piece of 15-by-75-inch, one-inch particle board on your work surface. Measure up 24 inches the end of the piece of particle board and mark a line that is 10 inches long and runs perpendicular to the 75-inch edge of the board. Measure up another inch from the line and mark another identical line that runs parallel to the first one.
- 2). Measure up 24 inches from the second line and mark in another set of two 10-inch lines spaced one inch apart. Repeat once more, so there are three pairs of 10-inch lines, spaced 24 inches apart along one 75-inch side of the particle board.
- 3). Cut out between the lines using a jigsaw. This will make three slots that are one-inch wide, 10 inches long and spaced 24 inches apart.
- 4). Lay one piece of 15-by-40-inch particle board on your work table. Mark a pair of 10-inch long lines, spaced one-inch apart in the middle of one 40-inch side of the particle board. Repeat with another two pieces of 15-by-40-inch particle board and then cut out between the lines like you did on the long piece of particle board.
- 5). Paint all slotted pieces of particle board, as well as two pieces of 40-by-75-inch particle board, which will become the base and the top platform of the single-sized bed. Leave the paint to dry before assembling the bed.
- 6). Spread wood glue into all the slots on the four slotted piece of particle board. Position the 75-inch-long piece slots upward, and fit the three 40-inch pieces slot-down into the three slots on the 75-inch long piece. Push the 40-inch pieces all the way down, so the slots on these pieces mate fully with the slots on the 75-inch piece. This creates a cubby for storage where the pieces mate. Leave the glue to dry before continuing.
- 7). Place the base piece of particle board over the top of the glued and mated particle board pieces. Secure it in position using 1½-inch wood screws through the bottom piece into the tops of the mated pieces of particle board every four to five inches.
- 8). Turn the bed over, so the bottom is now down and then center the remaining 40-by-75-inch piece over the top of the mated particle board pieces. Secure as you did the base of the bed. You will now have a sturdy platform-style bed made from particle board, with eight storage cubbies underneath.
