How You Get Waxy Buildup Off Linoleum Floors
- Linoleum floors can be scraped free of wax buildup. For small areas, a plastic dough scraper will work. For larger areas, a metal or plastic trowel, such as those used for masonry work, will scrape the floor well. Be careful when scraping, however, because once you break through the layers of wax, you could damage the floor.
- White vinegar is acidic enough to break down the wax buildup but not so acidic that it will damage the natural components of the linoleum. Mix 1 quart of white vinegar in 1 gallon of warm water and apply the solution to the floor with a mop. Allow the vinegar to set on the floor for several minutes before wiping dry.
- Ammonia breaks down wax quickly and can be applied directly to an area with severe wax buildup or can be mixed with water and mopped onto a floor. Mix two parts of ammonia into two parts of hot water and apply to the floor with a mop. Let the mixture sit on the floor wet for about 15 minutes before wiping dry or allow the mixture to air-dry.
- Sometimes, wax buildup requires a little more elbow grease than vinegar or ammonia alone can provide. Obtain a scrub brush with a long handle. Apply vinegar or ammonia directly to the floor and then use a circular motion to scrub the wax off the floor. After scrubbing, wipe the cleaner and wax buildup off with a clean cloth or mop.
